MECO Water Purification Helps Produce Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Treatments

A major biotechnology firm uses MECO’s water purification system to produce critical treatments for patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Situation

The client needed an immediate solution to meet their WFI (Water for Injection) requirements. The existing pretreatment system utilized Reverse Osmosis (RO), but the membranes were fouling resulting in high maintenance and down time. The client wanted a system that could provide low bio burden and endotoxin water to their VC stills without down time.

Solution

MECO’s MASTERpure™ technology utilizes the efficiency of Ultrafiltration (UF) combined with Vapor Compression to eliminate less valuable unit operations and substantially improve the water quality in the pretreatment process. Because the ultrafiltration units are chlorine tolerant and automatically backwashed at regular intervals, they are far less susceptible to fouling and easier to clean than traditional Reverse Osmosis (RO) membranes. Water Softeners (WS) and Carbon Filters (CF) were utilized to replace the original chemical injection system used to remove chlorine and hardness from the feed water. In addition, the UF system uses less energy and conserves more water.

Benefit

MECO’s MASTERpure™ technology design provided the WFI needed for production by removing various constituents before they entered the system. The ultrafiltration system rejects only 5% of the feed water compared to the reverse osmosis system rejecting 25% of the feed water. This unique design reduced energy costs, and the operation and maintenance of the plant. Ultimately, the system eliminated traditional media filters, cartridge filters and saved the client from the maintenance and downtime associated with filter replacement and fouling.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease that causes damage to the central nervous system, manifested in outward and silent symptoms. Although there is no cure for MS, many treatments are available that can help slow the progression of the disease.

MS is thought to affect more than 2 million people across the globe.

MECO is a manufacturer of engineered products for water purification serving a multiple of industries. The company has a history of providing products and services to the US Armed forces dating as far back as World War II. MECO is the world’s leading producer of water purification plants for offshore oil and gas platforms and the biopharmaceutical industry where ultrapure water is the primary ingredient in the drug manufacturing process.
