Design Development

Where the Big Idea Begins.

From the moment a project starts, prior to project acceptance, our team follows strict protocol. It begins with confirming your User Requirements (URS) or, in some cases, helping develop them. The team is then brought together to define the scope of work, research every aspect of your plant (site, feedwater, etc.) and make recommendations.

As the project moves forward, our documented system guides every step from design and development planning to control of design and development changes. It is this systematic attention to every detail that ensures all customer specifications and applicable statutory codes and regulatory requirements are met.

For every project, Engineering is responsible for planning the design. Engineering establishes a design plan by identifying design activities and assigning responsibilities for the design tasks. This planning includes:

  • Scheduling performance of the required design and development tasks in coordination with Project Management.
  • Assigning responsibility for implementation of required tasks to qualified personnel equipped with adequate resources.
  • Defining verification and validation methods appropriate to each design and development stage.
  • Defining control, organization and technical interfaces between appropriate departments and with the customer.
  • Establishing a design schedule that includes design review activity and updates as the design progresses.

  •

Engineering identifies, documents and reviews for accuracy all design inputs and outputs. All design output is approved by Engineering.

Sources for design input include customer specifications, contractual requirements, applicable statutory and regulatory requirements, design review minutes, and any other applicable documents.

Output data is generated throughout the life of the project, from initiation through customer acceptance. This data documents the final configuration of the end item. Our process for making sure that design output meets all requirements includes:

  • Ensure that design input is defined by the customer.
  • Ensure delivery to the customer of any design output certifications/documentation that are required.
  • Ensure design input criteria are feasible and acceptable.
  • Resolve with the customer any ambiguous or conflicting design requirements.
  • Provide all initial, and any changed design input, to all affected functional groups.
  • Ensure compliance to defined customer requirements throughout the life of the project.
  • Initiate Engineering Change Orders (ECO) for any changes to originally defined design input and maintain documented evidence of all such changes.
  •

Based on the design plan, Engineering conducts all design reviews. An initial design review is conducted at the beginning of each project with subsequent reviews scheduled as needed. Participants at each design review includes representatives from the appropriate organizational functions. As required, representatives of the customer or regulatory authority may participate in design reviews. All results of design review meetings are recorded with applicable actions assigned.

Design verification is planned, performed and documented to ensure that the design development outputs have satisfied the design and development input requirements.

Design verification includes the following:

  • Review of design stage documents before release.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of calculations ,and perform alternative calculations when required.
  • Compare designs with similar proven designs (if available).
  • Assignment of qualified drawing checkers and ensure that drawing checking is completed.
  • Review of design output documentation after changes have been made to verify accuracy, completeness and compliance with design output.
  • Documented certification and approval of all design output.

  •

Design validation is performed after successful completion of design verification and documented to ensure that the product conforms to design output. Design validation is normally performed on the final product but may be necessary in earlier stages prior to product completion. Our Validation Technician inspects project development and completes all specific validation records. All test data is collected and certified by our Engineering Department and included with the validation records.

MECO System Procedures and Engineering Operating Instructions define the process for identifying, recording, verifying, validating and approving design changes. Design changes are initiated via Engineering Change Orders (ECO). If applicable, the review of the design and development changes includes an evaluation of the effect of the changes on constituent parts and delivered products. All ECOs are approved by authorized Engineering Personnel.

Electronic notifications of ECOs are issued to applicable functional departments such as Drafting, Manufacturing and Quality. If the ECO impacts drawings currently released to Production, Manufacturing Drawing Control will issue the ECO to the shop floor along with any revised drawings, work orders and bills of material. All outdated drawings, work orders and bills of material are removed from the shop floor.

All records for ECOs are maintained electronically in our ManFact System.
