» How Vapor Compression Works » The MECO VC Difference
MECO Vapor Compression (VC) distillers are designed to produce Purified and WFI water in accordance with the U.S. Pharmocopoeia. Our distillers meet or exceed cGMP/USP industry standards including sanitary construction features such as double tubesheet heat exchangers, sloped piping and low point drains, minimum deadlegs, and sanitary connections. MECO VC stills have a smaller footprint with easy access for maintenance.
In addition, each comes equipped with the MASTERedge™ Package, a system of features that provides even greater value. You also benefit from the expert and responsive service delivered through MECO's MASTERsupport™ service capabilities.
The GII Centurbo™ Compressor is exceptionally lightweight, quiet and clean, with features designed at enhancing efficiency. It is exceptionally quiet at less than 80 decibels. The GII sets a new standard for variable output that is designed to vary with your demand in order to reduce starts and stops and improve energy efficiency. It features fewer parts than its predecessor and less than 10% of the parts of other industrial compressors, which increase its reliability substantially. An advanced lubrication system uses only air and an intermittant mist of oil to cool and lubricate the bearings. No more storing, circulating, filtering and changing large quantities of oil.
IHC - Hot StandbyMECO's Integral heating coil provides for hot standby operation and, with start up and distillate production, immediately upon demand. Demand can be automated from your storage tank or manually from your command. While in standby, the VC still maintains its temperature, pressure, water levels, safety and alarm parameters. No pumping is required and the compressor is idle during hot standby.
Natural Circulation EvaporatorMECO's vertical arrangement allows the feed water to be on the inside of the tubes yielding numerous benefits to operation and maintenance. Feedwater boiling on the inside of a tube (percolation) allows the flow to travel up the inside diameter of the tube and return to the base of the evaporator via an internal downcomer. The natural circulation evaporator design eliminates the need to force circulation using pumps and spray nozzles, which increase both operating and maintenance costs.
DecarbonatorStainless steels are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Although several factors influence an evaporators susceptibility to SCC; the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxide are major contributors. MECO stills have a decarbonator in the feed water stream to remove oxygen and carbon dioxide before their harmful effects have a chance to impact the evaporator. Removing carbon dioxide from the feed water also provides the product water with a lower conductivity.

Fewer Parts
MECO’s new GII Centurbo Compressor has 90% fewer parts. Its directly driven variable speed motor eliminates belt drives, gear transmissions and flex couplings. Bearings are cooled with air and lubricated intermittently with a mere mist of oil. There’s no re-circulating oil system with filters, coolers, pumps, plumbing, valves and instrumentation. No more oil and filter changes. Maintenance goes down. Efficiency and reliability go up. You get more runtime and less headaches.
Variable Output
MECO’s new GII Centurbo Compressor automatically shifts production output as your needs vary, saving energy and money. Lowering system output by 25% consumes 40% less energy. The variable speed drive reduces energy spikes associated with across the line starters, resulting in lower utility rates. Your electrical switchgear doesn’t have to be sized for a greater than normal-load inrush current, so installation costs less.
Advanced Lubrication
Lubricating your VC still’s compressor bearings doesn’t have to be a big, messy job that involves storing, pumping, filtering and changing gallons of oil. MECO’s new GII Centurbo Compressor uses only air to cool the bearings and an intermittent mist of oil to lubricate them. Instead of gallons of oil every six months, its once-through system consumes less than two quarts per year. Better, more efficient lubrication gives you a cleaner, greener water room.
Quieter Operation
Operating at only 72 – 80 dBA, MECO’s new GII Centurbo Compressor is about as loud as a vacuum cleaner. You don’t need acoustic walls or personal hearing protection. Because people in adjoining spaces aren’t affected, you can locate your water room just about anywhere, even right next to an office. The low noise level eliminates the need for special OSHA compliance reporting. Your water room works better and is a better place to work.
A. Both MEF and VC produce water that meets the WFI requirements in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia.
A: Yes, vapor compression can produce both hot or cold USP Purified and WFI water. In many instances, vapor compression is the most cost effective solution for USP Purified water production.
A: Yes, because Vapor Compression stills run at a relatively low temperature and pressure (1.5 psig and 218 degF), the soft scale formation seen on Multi-Effect Stills is not a consideration. Multi-Effect Stills will form soft scale from other constituents in the feed water due to the elevated temperatures (300 degF).

By deaerating the feedwater, MECO removes oxygen which a primary contributor to corrosion. Non condenible gasses which would otherwise inhibit heat transfer are vented to atmosphere, eliminating the need for a vent condenser that would be a source of additional corrosion and maintenance.
This type of evaporator provides substantially greater clearance (5 X) for the raw water passages, which are most likely to foul in the event of an upset with the feedwater pretreatment system. Hopefully this will never be an issue, but if it is, you will be glad you have a MECO.
Controls are sometimes taken for granted until a utility fluctuation within the plant has impacted your critical utility. Fluctuations in steam pressure, feedwater pressure, temperature or distilled water backpressure can all have a direct impact on the consistency and quality of the water produced. With 5 PID loop controls, your plant will operate in the most stable manner possible regardless of external influences.
IHC-Hot Standby with instantaneous start up is provided by way of an integral heating coil. Delayed start-ups and maintenance associated with recirculation pumps and external heat exchangers are a thing of the past.
